About

Who I Am...

I've been a visual thinker for as long as I can remember, always doodling with pen or crayon. At the age of six I announced my intention to be a professional artist and was given private art lessons at the recommendation of my first grade teacher.

But I’ve always loved the rhythm of words and the power of “storying,” too. I began to read before the age of four, was writing poetry when I was eight, keeping a journal when I was ten, and soon writing weekly ghost stories for my middle school newspaper. In high school I managed several school publications and in my second year of college won a scholarship that gave me the opportunity to work with poets Bertram Minkham and John Logan and novelist, Joyce Carol Oates at the Cranbrook Institute one summer before transferring to art school where I studied graphic design, advertising, and illustration and minored in creative writing.

After a successful corporate career in publishing and marketing communications, I returned to graduate school at the University of Michigan where I earned my M.A. in Televisual Arts with a focus in film and video production. I went on from there to receive a Ph.D. in Persuasive Rhetoric and Media Criticism from Wayne State University in Detroit and since 2001 have taught and mentored many other writers, filmmakers, and artists at a number of colleges and universities in and around Detroit, Winston-Salem NC, Boston, and Miami.

In my professional life, I've created marketing materials for clients that include Xerox, Bell & Howell, Saturn Car Company, Proquest Learning Corporation, University of Michigan Medical Center, Michigan State Unviersity, Michigan State Historical Department, Educational Resources, Inc., Gale-Cengage Publishing, Miami youth symphonies, and more. I have also participated in creative works in performance, video, and multimedia at the University of Michigan, Wayne State University, Salem College of NC, the University of Miami, Miami-Dade Public Schools, and with other filmmakers.

My expertise spans illustration, multimedia compositing, web content creation, journalism and PR and uses my studio skills (including illustration and advanced work in Photoshop), promotional copywriting, scriptwriting, video work, corporate publishing, and academic experiences.

Today I consider myself a sort of cultural ambassador, working primarily with nonprofits, arts organizations, humanities-based community organizers, innovative startup companies, and educators to help promote not only their businesses but their creative objectives and philosophies.

SPECIALIZING IN VISUAL CONTENT & DIGITAL ART

You may be a genius at what you do but if your message isn't being seen or heard you won't be at it for long. Genius requires an audience, and in today's market you need to develop a distinctive voice with a visual identity that speaks loudly out of the digital cacophony and media kaleidoscope. It may be all about social media, but tools like infographics, blogs, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest also require a distinctive visual component and creative "look at me" approaches to get your prospects' attention. And, you need to marry that come-hither look with sticky content that keeps the prospect in your back pocket. That's what I'm here to help you do.

I've been creating get-noticed visual content for marketers for close to 25 years, and I can help your organization refine its voice to reach and persuade any targeted market of the value of your products and services. I've developed a distinctive approach for unique clients like Saturn and arts organizations, focusing on professional communication to increase exposure with direct authenticity, using both established and yet-unheard-of approaches that can make visual and social messaging work for your business, too.

Let me work for you.

I'd love to assist your organization in the process of finding its voice and visual identity as well as a place in the world through the messages we craft together. I'll quickly study and understand your market to deliver approaches that best fit your objectives and your audience's specific desires. I work with clients to brainstorm original campaigns and on "bespoke creations" with the executive who already knows what he or she wants. With my extensive experience in managing relationships, understanding and teaching effective communication strategies, advanced writing performance, public relations know-how, digital expertise, and hands-on experience in design and multimedia practices, we can brainstorm miracles together and take your business to its deserved level of wow!

I also provide fully researched and sophisticatedly designed infographics
under the imprint "Khangeroo."
